Polkadot Weekly Recap: November 6, 2026

Pinky Dottie · Nov 6, 2026 · 2 min read

The big topic in Polkadot this week is a governance vote to shrink the active validator set from 600 to 500. Below is a short, plain-English recap of that vote, the plan behind it, and what it may mean for people who stake DOT.

Referendum 1966: validator set from 600 to 500

Referendum 1966 is step 1 of a three-step cut in the number of active validators. It runs on the Whitelisted Caller track. As of November 6, 2026, SubSquare showed it in the "Deciding" phase with 99.9% of votes in favor: about 48.13M DOT in favor and about 36.4K DOT against.

If it passes, the change is set for relay chain block 33,814,400. Source: SubSquare, referendum 1966, as of November 6, 2026.

The "Metanode Q4" plan: 600, 500, 400, then 320

The forum proposal behind the vote describes a path from 600 to 500 to 400 to 320 validators in November, in weekly steps. The goal is for node operators to also run Asset Hub and People Chain collators, light nodes and RPC endpoints by the end of 2026.

The forum thread also shows open objections about the order of the steps and about how to measure RPC quality. Source: Polkadot Forum, Metanode 2026 Q4 target, as of November 6, 2026.

Timing of the first step

CryptoTicker estimates that block 33,814,400 would arrive around November 10 at 11:00 CET. That is a news-site estimate, so treat the exact time as approximate. Source: CryptoTicker, November 6, 2026.

What it could mean for validator rewards

The reward per validator stays the same in the plan, so with fewer validators the total paid to validators goes down. A community member calculated that the validators' share of new DOT issuance would move from 22.6% to about 18.8% after step 1, while the stakers' share stays at 45.2%. This is a community calculation, not an official number. Source: Polkadot Forum, as of November 6, 2026.

What it could mean if you stake DOT

CryptoTicker's summary of the forum discussion says that people who nominate validators directly can earn nothing in an era where none of their picks is in the active set. You can nominate up to 16 validators, so spreading your picks matters more when the set is smaller. People who use pools or exchanges depend on the operator's choices. DOT price snapshot

Cryptonomist reported DOT trading at $0.951 on November 4, 2026, and described the trend as bearish. This is only a snapshot of one moment, not a forecast. Source: Cryptonomist, November 4, 2026.

Wrap-up

The next thing to watch is whether referendum 1966 is confirmed and when the first step takes effect. We will cover the outcome in next week's recap.
